Students should lead fight against COVID; Dr. Madhav Prabhu

In shortest period of time the KLE Society’s Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital established 200 beds COVID hospital with world-class infrastructure in June-July 2020 said Dr. Madhav Prabhu, Covid Specialist of KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital, Belagavi. He was deliberating on the subject of Precautions, Prevention & Treatment of COVID-19 infection to BBA Student of KLE Nippani College through a Webinar.

He highlighted that establishing 150 beds ward and 50 beds ICU with a ventilator facility was a gigantic task but it was done with precision to treat the increasing number of COVID patients in the last year. As KLE Hospital being the referral centermost of the complex, critically ill covid patients were handled by our team with outstanding results comparable to any tertiary referral Centre. In the first wave patients reported to the hospital with typical complaints of fever, body ache, loss of smell & generalized weakness.

However, in the present 2nd wave all together presentation of symptoms are atypical in nature like red eyes, loose stool, sore throat, pain in the abdomen, breathlessness with a severe lung infection. In his presentations, he highlighted that the virus is mutating fast and changing its manifestations. Dr. Madhav Prabhu also cautioned that youngsters are the victims of this disease and a high incidence of death is reported in young population.

The virus is affecting even Pregnant women and also has high incidence of premature abortions due to covid infection. A large number of patients are on oxygen dependency may need ventilatory support. The covid infection is turning to be life-threatening if immediate hospitalization and treatment are not initiated. He called on & urged immediate initiation of treatment. Early medical intervention has produced very good results. Management of patients reporting very late to hospital with complications may end up with a fatal outcome. He repeatedly urged the youngsters to educate the covid infected masses to reach to the hospital early for a better outcome.

In his second part of presentation Dr. Madhav Prabhu called on students to send right message among the community and asked them to vaccinate all their near, dear ones. vaccinate without fear as vaccination is safe and is a strong security against virus. He advised the students to act as brand ambassadors and practice covid appropriate behaviors like remain in the home, social distancing & washing of hands frequently and request the family members to stay at home. If all of us stay in home for 14 days the chain of the virus will break. He also cautioned that the virus is more aggressive in people with diabetes, BP and other comorbid conditions. He called on the asymptomatic cases to be isolated in covid care centers. He also highlighted that KLE Lingraj College campus in college road is functioning as COVID care centre asked the people to make use of it. It has excellent facilities.

At the end of the talk enthusiastic students taking part in the interactive session raised questions about plasma therapy, black fungal infection, the effectiveness of vaccines, what is RT PCR false positive, HR-CT when & why. All the queries of the participants were amply cleared by Dr. Madhav Prabhu. Prof. Nachiket Hanmantgad, Principal KLE BBA College Nippani welcomed and proposed a vote of thanks. Teaching faculty consisting of Abhisekh More, Shruti Pattanshetti, Roopali Kale, Shruti Lohar, Vaishali Miraje were present. Students Ronak Chauhan, Aishwarya Chandavale, Sakshi Savant, Jaideep Patil took part in an interactive session. Over 50 students & staff were present.
