Hyderabad; ‘Bulk Drug Capital of India’

Hyderabad which was once known as ‘City of Pearls’ has emerged as ‘Bulk Drug Capital of India’ it has placed a strong foothold in Pharma Sector. It is a home to the most US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA)-approved companies with 214 units certified by the US drug administrator, Hyderabad is far ahead of New Jersey which has 189 units only.

It accounts for 40 per cent of the total Indian bulk drug production and 50 per cent of the bulk drug exports and is considered as the ‘Bulk Drug Capital of India’. In value terms, the industry is worth US$ 1.6 billion and exports accounting to over US$ 500 million. Manufacturing industry is projected to grow 20% annually. The Life Science sector has over 5 lakh strong employees.

Pavilion structure

It houses Pharma giants such as; Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, , Novartis, Nicholas Piramal, Divi Labs, NATCO Pharma, Gland Pharmaceuticals, Aurobindo pharmaceuticals, Mylan. The Andhra Pradesh & Telangana has over 200 ‘Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API)’ units in the state, which have registered impressive growth rate of 10 to 15%.

It is also the ‘Vaccine Hub of India’ which produces almost 35% vaccine requirements of the world. The leading vaccine producers such as Bharat Biotech, Biological E, Shantha Biotech, Indian Immunologicals, Globion Bio etc are placed in this city.
