In a remarkable medical achievement, a 20-month-old boy named Druva (from M K Hubli), born with a rare congenital heart defect known as a ‘Coronary cameral fistula’, underwent successful surgery at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital in Belgaum. This rare condition, occurring in approximately one out of every 2,000 children, involves an abnormal connection between the main coronary artery and a heart chamber, leading to symptoms of heart failure.
Druva had been experiencing frequent colds, coughs, breathlessness, fatigue, and failure to thrive. He was referred to Dr. Veeresh Manvi, Senior Paediatric Cardiologist at KLES Hospital, who promptly diagnosed the condition using echocardiography. Further investigation through a coronary catheterization study confirmed the congenital defect.
The complex surgical repair was expertly performed by Australian trained Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Gananjay Salve. The surgical team included Dr. Anand Vagarali, Senior Perfusionist Mr. Anand Ghorpade, experienced Cardiac Surgical Assistant Mr. Abhay Sansuddi, and Senior Cardiac Surgical Nurse Sr. Savitri Patil.
Postoperative care, managed by Paediatric Cardiac Intensivist Dr. Nidhi G. Manvi and the dedicated nurses in the intensive thoracic care and postoperative recovery ward, ensured Druva’s smooth recovery.
Dr. Prabhakar Kore, Chairman of KLE Society, expressed profound gratitude to the members of Rotary Club Belgaum South for their financial assistance through the ‘Gift of Life’ program. Col. (Dr.) M Dayananda, Medical Director of KLES Hospital, congratulated the medical team for their exceptional skills and dedication. Druva’s grateful parents extended heartfelt thanks to the Rotary members and hospital staff for their care and support.
