Rags to Riches: Pinki Haryan’s Inspirational Journey from Street Beggar to Medical Doctor

It’s an encouraging saga of perseverance, a young girl who once begged on the streets of Mcleodganj (Himachal Pradesh)  has now returned to her hometown as a qualified doctor. Pinki Haryan’s journey from poverty to prominence is a testament to the power of education and the unwavering support of those who believed in her.

It all began in 2004 when Pinki, then a child, was discovered by Lobsang Jamyang, a Tibetan monk and Director of the Tong-Len Charitable Trust. Recognizing the sharpness & potential in Pinki, Jamyang convinced her family to allow her to continue education. With the Trust’s support, Pinki enrolled in school and later secured a place at a hostel for destitute children.

In spite of facing numerous challenges, Pinki remained devoted to her studies. Her hard work and determination paid off as she successfully cleared her senior secondary examination and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). However, financial constraints prevented her from joining a Private Medical College in India.

Undeterred, the Tong-Len Charitable Trust secured funding from its UK branch, enabling Pinki to pursue a medical degree in China. After completing her MBBS, she recently returned to Dharamshala and is now preparing for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) to practice medicine in India.

Pinki’s inspiring story is a beacon of hope for countless others who face similar circumstances. It serves as a reminder that with the right support and determination, even the most challenging obstacles can be overcome.
