Eighteen month male child who sustained severe head injury following a fall was admitted in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), Chennai found brain dead. The parents came forward to donate his organs. This is the youngest donor so far in the Tamil Nadu State. On earlier occasion the organs of the three-year-old child donated organs.
As per the records of Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) so far 52 paediatric donors in the State from 2010 to January 6, 2023.
Two kidneys and liver were retrieved and were utilised. TRANSTAN allocated the kidneys to a private hospital in the city. Considering the kidney size, both the kidneys were transplanted ‘en bloc’, meaning to a single recipient who is a 19 year girl.
This is the first time that TRANSTAN has allocated the liver from an 18-month-old brain-dead child to a four-month-old baby. With this donation the child has given new lease of life to two patients.
