The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a notification outlining guidelines for medical colleges, particularly focusing on faculty attendance, infrastructure requirements, and standards for postgraduate medical courses. The key points of the notification include:
Faculty Attendance: The NMC has made it mandatory for all medical college faculties to maintain a minimum attendance of 75% of the total working days.
Full-Time Faculty: The guidelines emphasize that faculty members should be employed on a full-time basis and are prohibited from engaging in private practice during college hours.
Postgraduate Medical Courses: For medical colleges looking to start postgraduate medical courses, the NMC has specified that 80% of hospital beds should be occupied throughout the year by patients requiring in-patient care. Additionally, a minimum of 15% of total beds in the department providing post-graduate training should be designated as Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds or High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds exclusively for that department.
Online Presence: Every medical college is required to have its own website containing details such as department facilities, faculty information with contact details, postgraduate course details including the number of seats, information about admitted students, and clinical workload details for each department (OPD, IPD, and surgeries).
Surveillance: Medical colleges are instructed to install a prescribed number of cameras at specified locations. There should also be sufficient space and an adequate number of examination cubicles in the out-patient department, along with a dedicated teaching room for each teaching department. These rooms must have audio-visual facilities and the capacity to accommodate a suitable number of students for clinical case discussions and demonstrations.
These guidelines aim to ensure the quality of medical education, faculty commitment, and the overall infrastructure of medical colleges offering postgraduate courses.
