In a remarkable feat of medical skill, expertise and by using state of the art medical infrastructure team of cardiac surgeons at KLES Hospital successfully performed a complex dual surgery on a 38-year-old patient from Chikkodi taluk. The patient, who was battling a life-threatening condition involving a tumour in the right side of the heart (Right Atrium Myxoma) and Pulmonary Embolism, was saved by team of cardiac surgeons thanks to the expertise of the surgical team.
The patient, a resident of a village Chikkodi taluka, was admitted to a private hospital in Kolhapur with severe symptoms including chest tightness, cough, fever, and breathlessness. After undergoing a series of tests including C T Scan, ECHO, it was determined that he had both Right Atrium Myxoma and pulmonary emboli, a potentially fatal condition.
Dr. Sameer Ambar, a cardiologist at KLES Hospital, immediately recommended surgery to remove the tumor and treat the pulmonary embolism. The surgical team, led by Dr. Darshan D S and Dr. Parishwanath Patil, with anaesthesia support from Dr. Sharangouda Patil, successfully performed the complex procedure.
“Usually 80% of heart tumours are on the left side of heart, but in this case RA Myxoma is a sporadic condition (one in a lakh), with only about 20% of cases occurring in the right atrium,” explained Dr. Parishwanath. He also added tumour emboli to both the lungs are very serious & high risk condition. “Had the surgery been delayed, the tumour could have obstructed blood flow, leading to serious complications. The combination of pulmonary embolism and RA Myxoma significantly increased the risk to the patient’s life, However timely diagnosis and early surgery saved the life of an young individual said Dr. Parishwanath.
Thanks to the timely intervention of the surgical team, the patient has recovered well and has been discharged from the hospital.
