Don’t Panic, Stay Alert: Dr. Shahabaz Patel, Cardiologist Addresses Senior Citizens

In recent weeks, there has been an increase in heart-related deaths across various districts of Karnataka. This has created anxiety among the general public, especially heart patients and their families.

To address this concern and provide clear medical guidance, a special interactive session with senior citizens was held at CentraCare Hospital in Tilakwadi. Cardiologist Dr. Shahbaz Patel led the session and emphasized that panic is unnecessary but education & awareness is essential.

Dr. Patel explained that heart diseases usually do not occur suddenly. In most cases, they are the result of long-standing conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, sedentary lifestyle, chronic stress, poor sleep, and excessive consumption of oily and fried foods, skipping medications, and lack of regular health checkups.

Dr. Shahabaz assured the senior citizen that reputed institutions like Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology in Bengaluru, All India Institute of Medical Sceince, New Delhi, and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have confirmed that COVID vaccine is not the reason for spike heart problems.

In response to audience questions, Dr. Patel pointed out that smoking, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, salty packaged foods, overconsumption of fried and non-vegetarian food, lack of physical activity, and constant exposure to TV and mobile screens are harmful to heart health.

He advised seniors to avoid traveling at night during the cold monsoon season, wear warm clothing, and stay active at home with light exercise, meditation, and walking. He also suggested eating more fruits and vegetables, avoiding late-night meals, and managing stress through music, meditation, and advised to spend quality time with family.

Answering a question about symptoms of heart disease, Dr. Patel demonstrated that chest pain, unusual sweating, breathlessness, fatigue, shoulder or back pain, and signs of acidity should not be ignored. Immediate hospital care is crucial.

Medical Director Dr. Neeta Deshpande concluded the program by highlighting that CentraCare Hospital offers advanced heart care services including Cath lab facilities for performing angiography, angioplasty, modern ICUs, and experienced doctors and nurses are avialble 24x&. She thanked the senior citizens for their active participation. After the session, Dr. Patel conducted free heart check-ups for over 60 senior citizens.
