Blending Medicine, Music, Meditation, and Movement to Enrich Health: Dr. Rajendra Bhandankar

Dr. Rajendra Bhandankar, Chief of Joint Replacement Surgeon at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital, Belagavi, advocated holistic approach to Medicine and called on participating delegates to uphold the dignity of the medical profession. He delivered a profound oration instituted in the name of Dr. Verghes Chacko, a pioneer in the field of Orthopaedics, which was held at the 48th State Conference of the Karnataka Orthopaedic Association Conference – 2024 (KOACON-2024) hosted at Subbayya Medical College, Shimogga. Titled “Back to Future” Dr. Bhandankar’s discourse underscored the symbiotic relationship between medical practice and societal upliftment.

In his address, Dr. Bhandankar extolled the medical profession as the noblest vocation, asserting that beyond healing, doctors bear a deep responsibility for the betterment of the society, advocating for radical transformations. He emphasized that a doctor’s success should be measured not only by clinical achievements but also by their commitment to serving the marginalized and disadvantaged with dignity and respect.

Drawing from his personal experiences, Dr. Bhandankar shared anecdotes of his journey as both a medical practitioner and a Tabla maestro, highlighting the influence of celebrated figures like the late Gangubai Hangal in shaping his holistic approach to healthcare. Inspired by his mentor, he spearheaded initiatives such as music school at KLE University and music programs for patients within the hospital premises, fostering community engagement and inner satisfaction among patients and healthcare professionals.

Turning his focus to the advancements in joint replacement surgery, Dr. Bhandankar elucidated the remarkable progress in medical technology, surgical techniques, and post-operative care, leading to improved outcomes for patients. With a surge in conditions like arthritis, obesity, indiscriminate use of painkillers/steroids, sports injuries joints are being damaged. He stressed the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, involving anaesthetists, physiotherapists, nurses, and surgeons for optimal patient care. He further highlighted over 5000 joint replacement surgeries are conducted with results at par with global standards. He also called on doctors to educate masses on the importance of lifestyle modifications to keep the non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension & stroke away. He also highlighted that emotional wellbeing and mindfulness are the important embodiments which all doctors should possess.

Addressing the prevalent issue of burnout in the medical profession & doctors succumbing due to professional pressures is a cause of concern, Dr. Bhandankar pitched for involvement in social work and nation-building activities as avenues for professional fulfilment and to derive contentment. He urged his peers to embrace meditation for inner peace and resilience. Dr. Bhandankar’s insightful discourse garnered accolades from the attendees, culminating in a felicitation by the organizers of KOACON-2024.
