Researchers at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune have revealed a hidden gem from our ancient traditions ‘Yoga Nidra’. This simple yet powerful technique, traditionally used for relaxation, has been scientifically established to sharpen the mind and send an individual into a deeper sleep.
The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, found that practicing ‘Yoga Nidra’ under supervision significantly improved cognitive performance. Volunteers taking part in the study saw faster reaction times and greater accuracy on cognitive tasks, suggesting a boost in memory, learning, and attention.
‘Yoga Nidra’ also proved to be a sleep champion, promoting sounder nights with measurable improvements in sleep quality. This makes it a promising tool for combating sleep problems and achieving overall well-being.
“This research highlights the importance of embracing the wisdom embedded in our ancient practices,” said Lieutenant General Narendra Kotwal, Director and Commandant of AFMC, praising Colonel Karuna Datta, the lead researcher, for shining a scientific light on Yoga Nidra’s potential.
Funded by the Department of Science and Technology, the project has not only yielded valuable results but also established a state-of-the-art Human Sleep Research Lab at AFMC, paving the way for further exploration of traditional practices for health.
“This is a shining example of translational research, bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and modern science,” said Major General D Vivekananda, Dean and Deputy Commandant of AFMC Pune.
