‘Tomato flu’ is known by this name because of the red, painful blisters/swellings appearing on children’s bodies and progressively increasing to the size of a tomato.
‘Tomato flu’, is a type of hand, foot, and mouth disease and cases are reported in the states of Kerala and Orissa. The first case was reported in Kerala and it is estimated to have infected 82 children below 5 years of age.
Cause:
Tomato Flu is caused by intestinal viruses and is rarely reported in adults as they have better immune systems strong enough to defend themselves from the virus.
Symptoms:
High fever, joint swelling and fatigue, the disease resembles chikungunya. In a few cases, it is reported to have symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, dehydration, swollen joints and body aches.
Preventive Measures
Strictly adhere to time-tested good hygiene practices. Avoid scratching or puncturing the blisters, it may aggravate further.
Treatment:
If such symptoms are reported immediately consult a child specialist. It is highly contagious but self-limiting, as per medical experts’ opinion, no specific drugs exist to treat the disease.
