A joy ride in a tractor after school, ended into a major life threatening accident for Mahesh Patil ( Name Changed), a thirteen-year-old boy from Akkimaradi, Mudhol . He fell off the tractor and the tractor ran over his waist and thighs, causing grievous injuries. He sustained fractures to the right thigh, pelvis and left leg as well as injury to major blood vessel of the Right lower limb.
His life was at risk due to internal bleeding caused by major fractures. He was also at risk of loosing his right leg due to injury to right femoral artery.
Fortunately for Mahesh, he was referred in time to Lakeview Goaves Hospital which has a comprehensive Trauma team and advanced facilities, that could deal with such a complex case of injuries to multiple organ systems. The experienced team of doctors at Lakeview Goaves Hospital, skilfully worked together to not only save Mahesh’s life but also his leg.
Mahesh had a deep open wounds in both groin regions and penetrating injury to the perineum. His right leg had no pulsation. The team of doctors that included Intensivists, Cardiovascular surgeon, Orthopaedic surgeon, Gastro surgeon and Anaesthetists, immedietly and simultaneously, attended to the patient.
The right femoral artery (which constitutes the major blood supply to the lower limb) was exposed showing evidence of long segment thrombus with spasms of the femoral artery. An embolectomy was done on the right femoral artery and the vessel was secured with reestablishment of blood suply by Dr KM Kattimani, senior Cardiac surgeon. The fractures were fixed by Dr KS Mane, Senior Ortho and Spine surgeon. The perineal wounds were dealt by Dr Shrishail Hangandi. Our senior anaesthetists Dr Prashant and Dr Veeranna B, made sure that the patient remained stable throughout these complex and extensive procedures over a period of 6 hours.
After 15 days of hospital stay, Mahesh was discharged home. At 3 months follow up, Muttappa is fine and has fully functional legs. The doctors are confident he’ll be ready to walk in 4 weeks with Physiotherapy and lead a normal life in the future.
Dr Shashikant Kulgod, MD & CEO of the hospital has congratulated the team of specialists who gave a new lease of life to this child by timely and coordinated team effort.
