Early detection of congenital heart defects through prenatal diagnostics has become crucial in improving outcomes for infants. Dr. Veeresh Manvi, a Senior Paediatric Cardiologist at KLES Dr. Prabahakar Kore Hospital and MRC, has been at the forefront of diagnosing such conditions in unborn babies.
Recently, Dr. Veeresh Manvi’s team successfully performed a rare neonatal cardiac intervention on two new-borns diagnosed with critical valvular aortic stenosis at just 10 and 15 days old. This condition, marked by severe narrowing of the aortic valve, was identified during pregnancy, enabling the medical team to prepare adequately. The ability to diagnose these conditions before birth marks a significant advancement in medical science, with the majority of defects now detectable through routine anomaly scans of the fetus.
Dr. Manvi diagnosed the heart defect in both babies during pregnancy and advised the parents to continue with the pregnancy, assuring them of the potential for successful surgery. After birth, when the infants became symptomatic, they underwent balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV), performed by Dr. Manvi himself, supported by an expert team including Anaesthesiologists Dr. Anand Vagrali, Dr. Kedar, and Dr. Mahantesh Mudkangoudar. Post-procedure care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was overseen by Dr. S. M. Dhaded and Dr. Manisha Bhandankar, with technical assistance provided by Mr. Rajesh.
