Dr Sameer Sarraf, Senior Cardiologist & Assistant Professor of Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences, Saifai (Dist. Etawaha) has been arrested for endangering the lives of nearly 200+ patients, whom he implanted with substandard pacemakers while charging for expensive ones that were MRI-proof.
Based on the complaints lodged by the patients, Vice Chancellor of the Saifai Medical University Prof Raj Kumar had ordered an inquiry to find out the malpractices being carried by Dr. Sameer in implantation of pacemakers at inflated tariff.
Dr. Sarraf charged patients for the high-grade pacemakers – which cost up to Rs 2 lakh – while actually implanting substandard pacemakers for over 200 patients. While the actual cost of the pacemakers used on patients costs approximately up to Rs 80,000, the police said.
Dr Sarraf’s luxurious lifestyle and frequent foreign trips also came under scanner during the investigation. Senior Superintendent of Police of Etawah Sanjay Kumar Verma ordered the arrest of Sarraf. Previously Dr. Saraff was involved in indiscriminate purchases, unnecessary foreign trips, suspected pacemaker fraud and corruption that cost the administration lakhs of rupees.
“The arrested doctor Samir Sarraf has been taken to Lucknow where he would be produced before the court that deals with cases lodged under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.” The charges also include demanding exorbitant amounts from pacemaker implanted patients who were actually covered under Ayushman Bharath scheme.
