What is orthodontics? How it helps individual with irregular teeth?
Orthodontics is the dental specialty that focuses on the development, prevention, and correction of irregularities of the teeth, bite, and jaws. Why should you treat Malocclusion?
Malocclusion is a misalignment or incorrect relation between the teeth of the upper and lower dental arches when they approach each other as the jaws close. If untreated malocclusion can lead to:
• Crowded teeth that are difficult to brush and floss.
• Increased risk of tooth decay or gum disease.
• Protruding teeth that are more susceptible to chipping.
• Unfavourable jaw or facial growth.
• Uneven tooth wear.
• Speech impediments.
• Reduced self-esteem.
What is the prevalence of Malocclusion?
Various studies have shown that, it is almost 80-85% children in the age group of 8-15 years of age have some sort of irregular/crowded teeth. At least 20-25% of children need immediate treatment.
What is the suitable age for the child get braces?
It is recommended to get first Orthodontic Consultation by the age of 7 years. Usually, orthodontic and facial orthopaedic (Jawbone) treatment is between 9- 14 years of age, but orthodontic treatment can be done at any age. In case of adults overcoming some extreme types of malocclusions may require more than one type of orthodontic treatment and in few cases jaw surgery is advised.
What are the different types of braces available?
1. Brackets, metal, or plastic, clear or tooth-coloured, that are bonded to teeth.
2. Lingual-type brackets that attach to the back of teeth, hidden from view.
3. Invisible, clear aligners that can be removed from the mouth.
